The mission of the Waterborne Education Center (WEC) is to foster appreciation and stewardship of coastal resources, heritage and culture by providing hands-on, waterborne education services. This is accomplished through scientific training in the natural environment on the water and in the marsh. Participants have included public and private schools, universities and colleges, industry and other groups interested in learning more about the ecology, history and economic productivity of the Texas coast. The WEC is a nonprofit organization.

Field labs are conducted aboard a 45-foot renovated Coast Guard buoy tender. This vessel is Coast Guard certified and is operated by a licensed crew. Each vessel has an operating lab below deck. A gangplank mounted on the vessel makes for easy loading and unloading from shore or in the marsh. Passengers are encouraged to disembark and engage their senses in the exciting wetland environment.

Our Vision

The WEC believes that each generation bears a responsibility to ensure the legacy of our forbearers is conveyed to future generations. It also believes preservation of cultural heritage is dependent on sustaining the natural resources from which it evolved. The WEC endeavors to preserve the environment and cultural history through hands-on activities and direct education of youth in the subjects of ecology, history and socio-economics of the Texas coast.
